Analemma at Delta Sensory Gardens

Analemma at Delta Sensory Gardens

Special thanks to Terry Cunningham for this photo and for drawing this dial to my attention

The Delta Sensory Gardens consist of a series of interconnecting gardens of a multi-sensory nature covering 2.5 acres. A combination of both formal and informal landscapes allow visitors to watch splashing fountains and waterfalls, enjoy herbs and perfumed plants, many in raised beds (suitable for access by wheelchair), watch fish, reflect on sculptures, or simply sit around and enjoy flowers and foliage. They include a water and woodland garden, a sculpture garden, a musical garden and a rose garden with a combined analemma/water feature at it's centre. The analemma looks like a tall thin figure of eight with the initial letter of each month placed around the curve. When viewed at noon (clock time) each day, the light spot from the sun shining through the aperture on the ring traces out the analemma over the course of a year. It also indicates the date.

Over 3 metres in diameter, water emerges from the top of the sundial and gently flows down the two outsides of the ring reflecting the light. You can see the ripple effect in this photo.
