Donegal Sundial

St. Peters Church of Ireland, Killaghtee

Killaghtee Sundial from above

On the south side of St. Peter's Church of Ireland, Killaghtee, in the graveyard, is a large undated (c.1853) monumental limestone sundial. Deeply incised into the 24" diameter capital top, it sits on a 16" square by 4ft. high plinth. It is engraved to show the time from 6a.m. to 6p.m. in Arabic numerals with hour, half hour and quarter hour divisions. There is a noon gap in the hour ring to compensate for the thickness of the now corroding iron gnomon.

Killaghtee is 1km west of Dunkineely on the N56 Road from Donegal Town to Killybegs.
