Old Mellifont Abbey, Co. Louth.

Founded in 1142A.D., but now a ruin, it was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland.
This scratch dial, encircled in red, is located on one of the capitals on the reconstructed cloister arcade.

Enhanced closeup photo of the scratch dial.

While common in England this type of dial is extremely rare in Ireland. The only other example recorded by me is at Cloghane in Co. Kerry.

The Abbey ruins are located 10km north-west of Drogheda off the R168 (Drogheda-Collon Road).

Lat 53° 45' North   Long 6° 28' West

If you know the location of a sundial in Ireland (NOT a mass produced DIY Store garden ornament) please email it to me (Click here to email M.J.Harley) - a member of British Sundial Society
