Derryglad Museum Sundial

Photo by kind permission of Charlie Finneran
Many thanks to Gearoid O'Brien for drawing this dial to my attention
There is an octagonal slate sundial on display in the privately owned Derryglad Folk and Heritage Museum, Curraghboy, Athlone.
The hours are marked in Roman numerals with four as IV and it shows the time from 4a.m. to 8p.m.in 30,15 and 5 min divisions.
There is a large 32 point fully qualified compass rose offset from the centre of the plate. The points of the octagon are labelled "N", "SE", "S" etc.with a maltese cross each side of the label. The space between the maltese crosses is filled with a ribbon decoration. There is a fleur-de-lis decoration where the "N" in the north point should be. The inscription reads over 6 lines: "Engraved by Thos Wall" , "Milltownpass" , "AD 1839" , "An Horizontal", "Sundial for", "Latitude 53 28 North"
The proprietor of the Museum, Mr Charlie Finneran has over 6,000 items dealing with history, heritage and folk culture. The collection also deals with farm and folk life in Ireland from the 18th Century to the recent past. On display in the MacCormac Photography Room are the contents of an extensive photographic premises in Athlone from 1948 to 2002 as well as items from studios, darkrooms and a finishing room.
